![]() In many ways I don’t think the premise of going back to the start or any book which begins with a highly knowledgeable character can work with LitRPG….how can I role play along with the MC and feel like I’m in the story if I’m in the dark? If they know or have done things we don’t know…then we can’t role play,we can only see what is revealed to us.When I first blogged about Redux in August of 2015 the opening line of the post read:Įvery once in a while something new comes along that just feels right. In the end the MC becomes an annoying narrator who withholds information from the reader and reveals random dues ex machina facts whenever it is plot convenient or the author had a cool idea in a web serial. If any halfway intelligent person go to go to the start again, they’d do much much better. Any system shop is the same…if you were clever you could deduce all sorts of things about a system from what is sold, the categories etc…but in story after story after story we see idiot MCs buy one or two random things from a system shop and then never think to hard about it.Īny powerful mechanic like future knowledge or an AI helper or a system shop…inherently has to be nerfed or limited. They are universally poorly used by the MC and or have to be so endlessly needed and repeat stupid self inflicted conversational wounds to keep explaining why the AI hasn’t given them information yet. ![]() Similar to the AI or helper systems which appear in many books. While I enjoyed the system mechanics the overall editing and writing was not my cup of tea.Īn interesting system will take you far, but was plagued by other problems the publisher should have helped with for a cut of the royalties.Īgreed, if this is the one I’m thinking of, it was set in Germany? It had an interesting mechanic where humans did rituals to spawn monsters, but it really went off into la la land in terms of the plot and endless fixations on trivial nonsense which had no payoff.Īll of these back to the start last human fighter at the end….really really struggle and I’m not sure I’ve seen one done well. I don't know if it is a serial or merely had ending issues. It kind of ended with something bad happening far away. The book didn't have much of a story arc. I felt that was an interesting idea and of all the things that is what kept me reading. What I liked most about this book was that the Apocalypse was man made with the summoning mechanic. He's most working hard to level up and get powerful and change the flow of information somewhat. He didn't show up to most things to stop key events from happening. Unlike most time traveling MC he had a vague plan rather than a more concrete one. It was kind of true to the MC himself because he kind of did the same. There were lots of things like this, large swaths of things that meandered without tightening the book up. (dumping info online then it is ignored, Mother seems important but then written off and excused, ect) It was mostly promise and payoff issues that were ignored or written away. The book continued to be mostly middling in writing, plot, character. We do get one of the writing sins of the MC looking in the mirror in order to describe their appearance, which had almost no relevance to the plot. It does improve but it was a rocky start. The type of stuff that leaves me extra-upset with the small press LitRPG publishers that let this fly more so than self-published versions. This books starts rough the whole future scene is filled with rough dialog, that I paused read outloud to verify the awkwardness, but then kept reading. Time for another Litrpg episode of time travel, putting things right that once went wrong, wait that's quantum leap.
